Storage Whetstone Health and Safety Policy
Storage Whetstone is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for all employees, contractors, customers and visitors. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to managing risks associated with storage facilities, removals operations and related activities carried out on our premises or on customer sites.
Policy Statement and Objectives
Our objective is to prevent accidents, injuries and ill health by identifying hazards, assessing risks and implementing effective controls. Health and safety considerations form an integral part of our planning, decision making and day to day operations, including the handling, transport and storage of customers belongings.
Senior management is responsible for ensuring that appropriate resources, training and supervision are provided so that this policy is implemented, maintained and regularly reviewed. All employees have a duty to co operate in achieving a safe workplace and to follow all safety procedures and instructions.
Legal Compliance and Continuous Improvement
Storage Whetstone will comply with all applicable health and safety legislation and recognised industry standards relevant to storage and removals services. We aim not only to meet but, where reasonably practicable, to exceed minimum legal requirements.
We are committed to continuous improvement in health and safety performance through regular monitoring, incident investigation, staff consultation and periodic policy reviews. Lessons learned from incidents, near misses and customer feedback are used to refine our risk controls and working practices.
Responsibilities
Management is responsible for establishing safe systems of work, carrying out risk assessments and ensuring that plant, equipment and facilities are properly maintained. Managers will make sure that staff receive appropriate information, training and supervision and that any breaches of safety rules are addressed promptly.
Employees must take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. This includes using equipment correctly, following safe working procedures, reporting hazards, incidents and near misses, and attending mandatory training.
Contractors working on site must comply with this policy and any specific safety instructions provided. They are responsible for ensuring that their own work practices, equipment and staff are safe and do not put others at risk.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Storage Whetstone will carry out and maintain suitable and sufficient risk assessments for all significant activities, including lifting and carrying, loading and unloading vehicles, operation of handling equipment, movement of goods within storage units, working at height where applicable, and fire and emergency procedures.
Results of risk assessments are used to develop safe systems of work. These systems are communicated to staff during induction and ongoing training, and are periodically reviewed to ensure they remain effective as operations, equipment or premises change.
Manual Handling and Removals Operations
Removals and storage activities often involve manual handling of a wide variety of items. To minimise the risk of injury, Storage Whetstone will provide suitable handling equipment where appropriate and will ensure that staff receive training in safe lifting techniques and team handling methods.
Employees must always assess the weight, size and shape of items before lifting, use mechanical aids where provided, and seek assistance with heavy or awkward loads. Routes must be kept clear of trip hazards, and care taken when negotiating stairs, ramps and confined spaces both on site and at customer premises.
Use of Equipment and Vehicles
All equipment used for storage and removals operations, including trolleys, sack trucks, lifting aids and any vehicles used for transportation, must be maintained in a safe condition. Pre use checks should be completed and any defects reported immediately so that equipment can be taken out of service if necessary.
Only trained and authorised personnel may operate specialised handling equipment or drive company vehicles. Speed limits, loading limits and parking instructions must be followed at all times on site and during customer visits to reduce the risk of collision, overturning or load shift.
Workplace Environment and Housekeeping
Good housekeeping is essential for safe storage and removals operations. Walkways, fire exits and access routes must be kept clear, floors must be kept as free as reasonably practicable from spillages and obstructions, and lighting must be adequate for safe movement and handling.
Storage units should be loaded in a stable and secure manner to prevent items from falling or shifting. Heavy items should be stored at lower levels where possible, and staff must avoid unsafe practices such as overreaching, climbing on shelving or using makeshift access methods.
Fire Safety and Emergency Procedures
Storage Whetstone maintains appropriate fire safety measures including clear evacuation routes, signage, alarm systems and firefighting equipment suited to the premises and nature of stored goods. Fire procedures, assembly points and responsibilities are clearly communicated to staff.
Regular fire drills and equipment checks are carried out. Staff must familiarise themselves with the nearest exits, follow instructions during an emergency and refrain from blocking or altering fire safety equipment or signage.
Training, Information and Supervision
All new employees receive health and safety induction training relevant to their role, including information on site rules, emergency procedures, manual handling, use of equipment and specific hazards associated with storage and removals activities.
Refresher training is provided when necessary and whenever there are significant changes to working practices or equipment. Supervisors monitor compliance with safety procedures and provide guidance and support to ensure that safe behaviours are followed consistently.
Incident Reporting and Investigation
All accidents, injuries, near misses and dangerous occurrences must be reported as soon as possible to management. Accurate records are kept and all incidents are investigated to identify underlying causes and implement corrective actions.
The purpose of incident investigation is not to apportion blame but to learn and prevent recurrence. Employees are encouraged to report hazards and safety concerns without fear of reprisal.
Consultation and Communication
Storage Whetstone recognises that effective health and safety management relies on good communication and involvement of staff. Employees are consulted on significant changes that may affect their health and safety and are encouraged to contribute suggestions for improvement.
Health and safety information, procedures and updates are communicated through notices, briefings and training sessions. This policy is available to all employees, customers, contractors and visitors on request.
Policy Review
This Health and Safety Policy will be reviewed regularly and updated when necessary to reflect changes in legislation, guidance, operational practices or the nature of our storage and removals services. The most recent version supersedes any previous statements.
By implementing this policy and working together, Storage Whetstone aims to maintain a safe and healthy environment for everyone who works with us or uses our storage and removals services.
